Famous British art pottery manufacturer Moorcroft and renowned Moorcroft designer Carole Lovatt – Puffins Jug, 1999. A stunning and absolutely perfect, boxed, Moorcroft Puffins jug / vase designed by Carole Lovatt. The Puffin’s design was discontinued many years ago and has become one of the most sought after of the modern Moorcroft patterns.

This beautifully designed, first quality, ceramic piece is decorated all over with one of the most famous of British birds – the Puffin against the backdrop of a beautiful coastal, cliff edge scene. It is extremely tactile given its wonderful glaze.

Carol Lovatt, was one of a group of gifted designers at the Moorcroft Design Studio that was set up in 1997, designed this beautiful and charming series of Puffin ceramics in 1997 and this piece was produced in 1999.

William Moorcroft, after attending what is now known as The Royal College of Art in London, started designing fine art pottery in Burslem, Stoke-On-Trent in 1897 whilst at James Macintyre and Co. There was huge demand for Moorcroft’s new ceramic art pottery and it was sold by prestigious stores such as Liberty of London, Harrods and Tiffany and Co in New York.

Substantially funded by Liberty and Co, Moorcroft was able to move production to its present site in Stoke-On-Trent at Sandbach Road under the name of W. Moorcroft Ltd. In 1928 Moorcroft was appointed ‘Potters to H.M. the late Queen’. The Queen taking new Moorcroft designs into the Royal Collection up until recently. Leonard A Lauder, President of the Estee Lauder empire has one of the largest Moorcroft collections in the world. Collected worldwide and by former U.S. Presidents, British Prime Ministers, famous actors and singers are collectors. Testament to Moorcroft’s enduring high quality and stunning designs, Moorcroft is still supplying Liberty of London more than 100 years later.

This jug / vase is signed with the ‘jug cyper’ denoting a production date of 1999. The copyright date, the date the design was first used is marked as c. 97 or copyright 1997. ‘Moorcroft Made in England’ and initials ‘WM’ are also marked.

Condition

In perfect boxed condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Please see photographs.
