Description
In General
A stunningly designed and intricately hand decorated 19th Century Japanese cloisonné enamel plate or charger on bronze, Meiji Period 1868 – 1913, c.1890.
The plate depicts two birds (likely to be Japanese or Oriental Tits) in flight among a beautiful and intricately worked Morning Glory cluster, together with other flowers, bamboo, grasses and foliage on a vivid blue background. The underside is covered with cobalt blue enamel with a swirl cloison background with matching blue enamel inside the foot ring. The enamel is all intact – without any breakage which is unusual. The plate has an attractive bronze rim and a very fine and intricate border. The quality of workmanship is impressive.
Cloisonné is an ancient and highly skilled technique of creating designs on metal vessels with coloured glass paste known as enamel placed within enclosures made of copper – called cloisons. By the end of the 19th century in Japan, the art of cloisonné enamelling had become a highly successful trade both in terms of manufacture and export. The ‘Golden Age’ of Japanese cloisonné enamels – the peak of artistic and technological perfection – was reached during the years 1880 to 1910. Incredible pieces were made for display at the great World Exhibitions of that time as well as for export.
