Description

In General

An exciting original oil painting of Bristol Docks by Barrington Tabb (1934 – 2022) a famous Modern British post war and contemporary painter. He was a Member of the Royal Academy in the West of England known as the RWA. He became celebrated for painting the docks, streets, pubs and parks of Bristol. Several of his paintings are in public collections including at the RWA. This original oil painting is called Bristol Docks and showcases his admiration of Vincent Van Gogh. The vivid use of colour and dramatic statements including the ink blue sky all uses Van Gogh as their reference point. As can be seen in this striking painting, Barrington Tabb enjoyed working in heavy almost encrusted oil pigment creating a highly appealing textured finish to his paintings.

Barrington Tabb was born in 1934 in Almondsbury, Gloucestershire, England and lived throughout his life in and around Bristol. He was very interested in the French impressionists and primitive painting. Barrington Tabb said: ” when I was young I was fascinated by colour and was influenced early on by Alfred Wallis and the Italian painters. Later I admired the work of Cezanne, Vlaminck Chaim, Soutine and most of all Vincent Van Gogh for their bold statements and lavish use of colours in their strength and power. I have always admired the work of Anne Redpath who painted French and Spanish primitive scenes and also French and Spanish primitive painters”. Although admiring the impressionists, he would regard himself as an Expressionist, painting his being into his work.

Barrington Tabb’s paintings have been exhibited regularly at RWA exhibitions and are held in their public collection, Bath Society of Artists, Davos Switzerland and solo shows with Anthony Hepworth Fine Art in Bath as well as the Christopher Hill Gallery and Sue Rankin Galleries in London. Tabb has been represented by Cube Gallery in Bristol for many years. A number of books have been written about Barrington Tabb and his paintings and he has appeared on TV and Radio.
