Description

In General

An absolutely wonderful, very tall (61 cm / 24 inches) rare pair of magnificent, opposing design, Japanese, hand decorated, Cloisonné Baluster vases comprising intricate enamel decoration on copper, Meiji Period 1868 – 1913, c.1910.  This ‘show stopper’ pair of Japanese Cloisonné vases will make a spectacular statement in any contemporary or period interior.

These vases have stunning images of a pair of ferocious green and grey dragons, dynamically flying around each vase.  This pair of tall ornate Cloisonné vases are made of copper, copper alloys and vitreous glass enamel.  The vitreous glass enamel gives the vases a high gloss finish which literally glitters under artificial lighting. The quality of the workmanship and attention to detail is impressive.  There is also fine detailing to the foot and rim.

The vases have the rare benefit of an opposing design with design differences between the vases.  The green dragon on the left hand vase has bright yellow eyes and is roaring whilst the green dragon on the right hand vase has enchanting pale blue eyes and is quiet.  They twist and turn around the vases slightly differently in design terms but are still book matched.  Similarly, the grey dragon on the right hand vase is roaring with bright yellow eyes whilst the grey dragon on the left hand vase is quiet and with beautiful pale blue eyes.  Again the design of each dragon is slightly different but complementary and still book matched.

The main background colour of each vase is a highly attractive burnt red and the base and interior of each vase comprises a blue enamel background.  The vases have attractive copper rims.

It is rare to find Japanese Cloisonné vases that are this tall, this dramatic and with such a stunning opposing design.

Cloisonné is an ancient and highly skilled technique of creating designs on metal vessels with coloured glass paste, known as enamel, placed within enclosures made of copper, called cloisons.

Year:

1868 – 1913.  Circa 1910.

Material:

Copper, copper alloys and vitreous glass enamel.

Condition:

In excellent antique condition.  There are no chips, cracks or restoration.  There is impact damage on the left hand vase’s green dragon on its neck and above its head.  The enamel is impacted and crazed in this area.  There is another much smaller area of impact damage near the rear foot and claw of the green dragon on the left hand vase.  However, these two areas of damage are not immediately obvious and does not take away from the overall stunning effect of these magnificent vases.  There is a small area of enamel loss on the inside of the left hand vase. There is a very small ‘dink’ on the copper rim of one of the vases as photographed. In general the enamel is in excellent condition with no other loss of enamel. Please see photographs.
