In General
A stunning and absolutely perfect example of Frances E. Lee’s exquisite and breathtakingly precise work at Doulton Lambeth. A really exquisite gem of a piece!
This beautifully designed, top quality stoneware Cream Jug is decorated with delicately carved leaves and leaf-like motifs. It is extremely tactile given its wonderful glaze and highly detailed incised and carved work. Its solid silver, hallmarked rim adds to the feeling of luxury of this piece.
Frances Lee was one of a group of very gifted designers that joined Doulton Lambeth in the 1870s with other eminent designers such as Edith Lupton, Eliza Simmance and sisters, Hannah, Lucy and Florence Barlow.
Frances Lee specialised in exceedingly precise incised and carved work. Her skill in glazing small areas with great precision was unparalleled. She produced both of the leading types of Lambeth output, namely Stoneware and Siliconware. The range of colours available to the designers/artists was limited at that time. However by using intense colours, Francis Lee produced high quality beautiful pieces that had a strong impact.
Much of Frances E. Lee’s work is illustrated in Desmond Eyles’ “The Doulton Lambeth Wares”. Like many of her contemporaries, she worked at Doulton Lambeth for many years from 1876-1894.
