A wonderful opportunity to own a magnificent "statement piece" antique French walnut carved Griffin circular dining table c.1840.
This impressive dining table - which can also be used as a hall table - has a massive hand carved pedestal base on paw feet supported by hand carved tripod dimensional Griffins on three legs to a moulded platform. The striking hand carved Griffins on the central support create an impressive focal point to this amazing piece.
The circular table top has decorative hand carved bevelled edges and a thick decorative apron. The tables 'time worn" patina adds to its appeal.
Just as a point of interest, we acquired this table from a seller who described it as a "Mahogany Pedestal Table Carved Base circa 1840". However when we had it looked at by a valuer who had worked at Sotheby's he described it as "A 19th Century Italian walnut circular table circa 1840 on tripod griffin supports to a moulded platform". Some individual woods are not always easy to identify but we think it is walnut.
In overall good solid antique condition. However the table has a number of scratches, nicks, dings and marks commensurate with its age and use. It is a table that responds well to proper waxing.
The table top is solid - however over time some narrow gaps have occurred in some of the planks of wood making up the table top. Two small circular wooden caps are missing on the table top
There is some surface wood loss and scratches to the tripod base. The moulded platform holding the table top has a cardboard panel to create a tight fit. Please see photographs.
